Himalayan Chyangra

The Himalayan Chyangra is a hardy mountain goat native to high-altitude regions (2,500 to 5,000 meters) of the Himalayas like Mustang, Dolpa, and Jumla. Famous for producing ultra-soft cashmere used in genuine Chyangra Pashmina, these goats are also highly prized for their organic meat during major festivals like Dashain.

Chyangra is the Nepali name for a real, specific goat, not a marketing word attached to a shawl. It is a compact, horned, double-coated animal of Nepal’s trans-Himalayan districts, herded through Mustang, Manang, Dolpa, Mugu, Jumla and Humla on a migratory round that follows the season. Under its long, coarse outer hair lies a dense undercoat of extremely fine down, and that down, combed out when the animal molts in spring, is the raw material behind chyangra pashmina. Below is what the breed is, what its fibre genuinely measures, how much one goat actually yields, what Nepal’s Chyangra Pashmina trademark does and does not certify, and what any of this means if you keep goats yourself.
